The Automation Technician – Team Lead is a hands-on leadership role responsible for both electrical panel fabrication and the coordination of shop activities. This role ensures control panels are built to the highest quality and in compliance with applicable industry standards and project requirements.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision
- Plan, coordinate, and lead daily activities in the control panel shop to meet production schedules and quality standards.
- Work closely with the Engineering Manager to schedule and prioritize panel builds based on project deadlines and available resources.
- Ensure all panels are built in accordance with UL 508A, UL 698A, and NFPA 79 standards.
- Review and validate wiring diagrams for technical accuracy and code compliance prior to production release.
- Monitor workloads, staffing levels, and resource needs to ensure efficient and on-time panel production.
- Serve as the final quality checkpoint for all panels prior to release, ensuring workmanship, safety, and code compliance.
- Support the ongoing development of team members by identifying training needs and mentoring newer technicians.
- Assist in basic project coordination, process support, and continuous improvement initiatives in the shop.
Hands-On Technical Responsibilities
- Assemble, wire, and test electrical control panels per schematics and layout drawings.
- Troubleshoot issues related to panel wiring, component installation, or control system functionality.
- Build and test systems involving VFDs, soft starters, relays, HMIs, PLCs, power supplies, and other standard control components.
- Ensure all work follows UL 508A, UL 698A, NFPA 79, and internal quality and safety standards.
- Operate hand tools and fabrication equipment to drill, tap, cut, and mount components as required.
- Provide on-site support for panel installation, terminations, and configuration when needed at customer locations.

Collaboration and Project Coordination
- Work with project managers, clients, and vendors to define and finalize design specifications.
- Participate in project meetings to review design progress, identify challenges, and propose solutions.
- Collaborate with vendors to source appropriate components and equipment for control panel design.
- Coordinate with the manufacturing team to ensure timely assembly and shipment of control panels.
- Assist Project engineers with field start-up and control panel fabrication and wiring.
- Complete other duties as assigned to contribute to the organization objectives.
Qualifications:
Education
- Associates degree Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Design, Mechatronics or a related field preferred.
- Technical certification with related experience considered.
Experience
- Experience in automation and control systems engineering in regulated industries (pharmaceuticals, food processing, etc.).
- Hands-on knowledge of UL 508A, UL 698A, NFPA 79, and cGMP requirements.
- Experience using AutoCAD Electrical to produce complete control system documentation.
- Familiarity with system qualification, commissioning protocols, and technical writing.
Technical Competencies
- Strong understanding of industrial automation architecture (PLC, HMI, SCADA, sensors, motor controls, etc.).
- Ability to perform system calculations including short circuit, load, and fault analysis.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Software Proficiency
- AutoCAD Electrical, Microsoft Excel, Word & PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat
Automation Platforms & PLC Hardware
- Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation), Siemens, Emerson/GE, Schneider Electric – Modicon and associated PLC and HMI programing software.
- Familiarity with EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, and other I/O communication protocols
Location
- Position located in Berwick, PA.
- This position may require same-day travel to customer facilities, primarily within a 4-hour radius of our Berwick, PA office. Occasional overnight travel may also be necessary, up to approximately 20% of the time, depending on project needs and customer schedules.
